Services
B.E.S.T. offeres the following services to our achievers:
Academic Advising Experienced counselors assist each Achiever in course selection based on the achievers's
individual needs. Acheivers are encouraged to meet with both the B.E.S.T. Director and Assistant Director, in addition
to their primary academic advisor each semester before finalizing their schedules. This process helps to ensure that
requirements of the College of General Education and academic majors are met.
Tutoring Achievers have the opportunity to request tutors in a wide variety of subjects. Since mastery of
course content is the goal, achievers are encouraged to work with tutors as often as needed to develop a thorough
understanding of their course content. In addition, the University Center for Academic Excellence, located right
down the hall, offers a wealth of resources.
Leadership Development Peer Mentoring promotes Achiever-to-Achiever support and provides a
collaborative framework for developing academic diligence, leadership skills, and learning strategies. Peer Leaders
help new Achievers reap the benefits from all of the B.E.S.T. programs and services. This peer network not only
provides academic support, but it also gives our Achievers many opportunities to establish a community of excellence.
Career Development Our career development program is dedicated to helping the undecided student discover
purpose and direction through self-exploration and career testing. When a student has a sense of direction, we are
available to help with internships, jobs, or graduate school. B.E.S.T. has an extensive career library which covers
subjects such as career choices, resume preparation, and portfolio development. We also maintain a collection of
graduate catalogues from area colleges and universities and offer assistance with the application procedures.
Opportunities from the University Career Center are posted weekly.
Computer Lab Our mini-lab is equipped with five PCs and two laser printers. All computers
are networked to the Student Computing Novell server. The Novell server provides students with 50 megs of personal
storage space (H drive) and access to Office 2000 applications.
Enrichment Activities B.E.S.T. Achievers have the opportunity to attend
educational and cultural enrichment activities. These activities help Achievers expand their worldview, develop a sense
of community, and balance the rigors of college life with heartfelt, down-home fun. Previous activities have included
excursions to the Biltmore Estates, whitewater rafting, and the Dale Chihuly exhibit at the Mint Museum of Craft and Design.
A current list of activities may be found in our monthly newsletter, Bookends, and on our Opportunities page.
